PSAT National Merit Cutoffs — Selection Index, Commended & State Lines

National Merit doesn't read your PSAT total — it reads the Selection Index, a weighted number most students have never computed. Here's the formula, the recent lines, and the calendar, so October's test has a target instead of a vibe.

Quick answer: Selection Index = (R/W × 2 + Math) ÷ 10, max 228. The 2026-entry Commended line was 209; state semifinalist cutoffs run roughly 205–223 (announced each September). A 700/700 PSAT yields SI 210 — one point past Commended.

The number that actually counts

Selection Index (SI) = (R/W × 2 + Math) ÷ 10 on the PSAT's 160–760 section scale — range 48 to 228. Reading & Writing is double-weighted, which surprises students who 'are math people': a 760/660 beats a 660/760 (218 vs 208) because the verbal score moves the index twice. Compute yours with the PSAT calculator; every NMSC line — Commended, Semifinalist, Finalist — reads this one number.

The lines: Commended, Semifinalist, Finalist

Commended: a single national line — 209 for 2026 entry (top ~3-4% of testers). Semifinalists: one line per state, proportional to graduation, historically ~205–223 (New Jersey and Massachusetts near the top, some Plains states near the floor; your state's most recent line is the only honest predictor). Semifinalists become Finalists with a confirming SAT score, a counselor endorsement and an application in the fall of senior year. Note the confirming SAT uses its own concorded index, not your PSAT.

  • Commended ≠ Semifinalist: 209-level earns the Letter of Commendation only in most states
  • State lines move a few points per year — treat last year's line as ±3, not gospel
  • Homeschoolers and boarding-school students use their state's line
  • The junior-year PSAT/NMSQT is the only sitting that counts — sophomore scores never qualify

The timeline

Test in October of junior year → NMSC announces Commended and Semifinalist lines the following September (start of senior year) → Semifinalists submit the application, essay and confirming scores that fall → Finalists announced February → scholarship offers (National Merit $2,500, corporate-sponsored, or college-sponsored — some colleges give full rides for Finalist status). The whole competition runs a year ahead of admission season, which is why a strong junior October pays off in senior-fall application leverage.

What SatCalcs doesn't do

  • We don't list every state's current-year cutoff — lines surface through school reports each September and we date-stamp what we cite
  • We don't predict next year's lines — cohort and state policy move them a few points either way

Frequently Asked Questions

What PSAT score qualifies for National Merit?
It depends on your state's Selection Index line, not the total. The 2026-entry Commended cutoff was SI 209 (about 1400 total with balanced sections), and state Semifinalist lines ranged roughly 205–223. Because R/W is double-weighted, a verbal-heavy profile qualifies more cheaply than a math-heavy one.
What is a good PSAT score for a sophomore?
Sophomores take the PSAT 10, which never enters the National Merit competition — so 'good' is purely a practice benchmark: 1000+ is above the typical sophomore distribution and 1150+ as a sophomore usually predicts Commended-level junior potential. Aim to convert the October junior sitting, not the practice one.
Do all states have the same National Merit cutoff?
No — Semifinalist lines are state-specific, set so each state's Semifinalists match roughly its share of US high-school graduates. Historically that spans ~205 (some Plains and Southern states) to ~223 (New Jersey). Move states, change your line — a fact that has quietly rewarded families in low-cutoff states.
How is the Selection Index different from the PSAT total?
The total is R/W + Math (320–1520); the Selection Index is (R/W × 2 + Math) ÷ 10 (48–228) — verbal double-weighted. NMSC uses only the SI; colleges and scholarships read the total. Two different numbers for two different audiences, computed from the same two section scores.
Does the National Merit Scholarship pay for college?
The base award is $2,500 — modest, but the real money is college-sponsored packages: dozens of universities grant full tuition (occasionally full ride) to Finalists who name them first choice. For strong testers, Finalist status is often worth more than any test-prep course costs.
When are National Merit cutoffs announced?
Each September: Commended line and Semifinalist state cutoffs for the October test taken the previous fall. Students learn through their schools; the lines are never published as one official list, which is why sites compile them from school reports — always date-check any cutoff table you read.
